All program works such as educational program needs evaluation. Evaluation
can provide information about the whole process of teaching and learning.
Evaluation is a wider concept. It comprises not only test but also the continuous
assessment which is made daily by the teacher by analysis of the material, syllabus,
textbook, teaching aid etc. Testing is only one component of evaluation. In the
context of language teaching, evaluation is intended to evaluate the language
learners’ ability and to know their level of language competence. In addition,
evaluation is also useful to improve teaching and learning process because a good
evaluation can provide the whole accurate information about the whole process of
teaching and learning.
As component of evaluation, testing is administered to measure what the students
know and understand of the materials learnt. In sum, teaching objective, teaching
process and testing are interrelated and they are equally important. In the context of
language teaching and learning, evaluation is conducted on the basis of language and
content. Referring to the significance of those three mentioned interrelationship, as
a language teacher it is useful to improve competence in developing language test,
for example developing test for English skill.
In the domain of language testing, majority Indonesian students of English
Department are impeded with some difficulties when they are assigned to develop a
test for the students’ English skill. This situation happens because language testing
works in a complicated procedure in the case of descriptions and measurements. This
book shares an experience with the students about how develop an language test.
Although this book is expected helpful to the students of undergraduate (Strata I) it
may be useful also for a teacher of English.
This book is organized in four chapters. Chapter I presents the underlying
theories on language testing covering approaches to language testing, creteria of good testing: validity, reliability, practicality, test type, scoring guide, scoring and
grading. Chapter II deals with Testing Listening. Chapter III deals with testing
Speaking. Chapter VI deals with Testing reading. Chapter V deals with testing
writing. Each capter elaborates: definition, strategy, defining the construct ability,
test format, test objectives.
